Hospital Chatbot in India: WhatsApp vs Website Chatbot, Uses and Cost
WhatsApp or website chatbot for your hospital? What a chatbot can safely do, what it costs, the WhatsApp rules, and when automation is enough instead.

Quick answer: a hospital chatbot is software that talks to patients in text — on WhatsApp, on the hospital's website or both — to answer questions, take appointment requests and send updates. In India, a WhatsApp chatbot usually works better than a website chatbot because patients already use WhatsApp every day and many never open a hospital website. A chatbot should only handle logistics (timings, doctors, fees, bookings, reminders), never diagnose, and must hand over to a person on request. It must also run on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, and the hospital still needs reliable booking and queue software behind it.
This guide compares WhatsApp and website chatbots, lists the jobs a hospital chatbot can safely do, explains what it costs, and says when you do not need one.
What a hospital chatbot can do
| Job | Example | Safe for a bot? |
|---|---|---|
| Answer fixed questions | OPD timings, doctor list, fees, address, parking | Yes |
| Collect an appointment request | Name, doctor, preferred date | Yes, with a person or system confirming |
| Send updates | Booking confirmation, token, reminder, reschedule | Yes |
| Send documents | Prescription or bill link after the visit | Yes |
| Collect feedback | A rating after the visit | Yes |
| Triage symptoms | "Is my chest pain serious?" | No — send to a doctor or emergency number |
| Give treatment advice | Dose changes, medicine substitutions | No |
The two "No" rows are where a chatbot becomes a patient-safety and legal risk. Set the bot to say plainly that it cannot give medical advice, and show an emergency number.
WhatsApp chatbot vs website chatbot
| WhatsApp chatbot | Website chatbot | |
|---|---|---|
| Where patients use it | The app they already open daily | Only if they visit your site |
| Reach in India | Very wide, including older patients and families | Narrower |
| Language | Hindi, English, regional, Hinglish | Often English-first |
| Proactive messages | Yes — reminders and updates, with approved templates | No — the patient must be on the page |
| Rules | WhatsApp Business policy and opt-in apply | Fewer platform rules |
| Setup | A verified business and WhatsApp Business Platform account | A script on your website |
Most Indian hospitals get more from WhatsApp. A website chatbot is worth adding only if a lot of patients already arrive from your website or Google.
Do you need a chatbot at all?
A chatbot answers a patient's message. Much hospital WhatsApp work is not answering but sending: a confirmation, a token, a reminder, a new time. That needs automation, not a chatbot. Use this test:
- If most of your WhatsApp time goes on sending the same messages, fix automation first.
- If reception cannot keep up with incoming "what time does the doctor sit?" and "can I come at 5?" messages, add a chatbot or a pinned answer.
- If patients want to book on their own, an online booking page may be enough, with no chat.

No chatbot needed for this part: in OPDly, every booking with a phone number gets a WhatsApp message with a live queue link, with no one typing it. See WhatsApp for hospitals.
The rules every hospital chatbot must follow
- Use the official WhatsApp Business Platform. Chatbots built on WhatsApp Web or a personal number break WhatsApp's terms, and the number can be banned. Read WhatsApp Business API for hospitals.
- Get patient opt-in before you message first, and keep a record of it.
- Use approved templates for any message the hospital starts. Inside 24 hours of the patient's last message you can reply freely.
- Protect patient data. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 expects you to use personal data only for the purpose it was given and keep it secure. Keep diagnoses and reports out of routine messages.
- Offer a human. "Talk to reception" should work at any step.
- Never claim the bot is a doctor.
What a hospital chatbot costs
Advertised prices vary a lot. In searches we ran in November 2026, hosted chatbot and WhatsApp API plans for clinics and hospitals started from roughly ₹500–1,500 a month, while custom builds and AI voice or chat agents were quoted much higher. Treat these as a range to compare, not as a promise. A chatbot's real cost has four parts:
- Setup: building and testing the flows.
- Platform fee: the tool and the shared inbox, monthly.
- WhatsApp message charges: Meta charges for messages the hospital starts; the provider may add a margin. Check Meta's current rate card for India.
- Maintenance: someone must keep timings, doctors and fees correct.
Ask every vendor: are message charges included, can reception take over a chat, and what happens to the chat history if you leave?
Mistakes to avoid
- Outdated answers. A bot that quotes last year's fees damages trust faster than no bot.
- No handover. A patient stuck in a menu goes elsewhere.
- A chatbot but no queue system. If bookings still go into a paper register, the bot only moves the problem.
- Using the hospital's main number on an unofficial tool.
- Medical advice from the bot.
- Promising 24/7 replies when nobody checks the handover chats at night.
How OPDly fits with a hospital chatbot
OPDly is not a chatbot. It handles what happens after a patient decides to come: the booking, the queue and the WhatsApp updates for every visit, through the official WhatsApp Business Platform.
- Every booking with a phone number gets a WhatsApp message — the token for a walk-in, the date and time otherwise.
- A live tracking link shows the patient's place in the queue, and after the visit the same link opens the prescription and bill PDFs.
- An evening-before reminder goes out for future bookings, and a new message goes out on reschedule.
- Patients who want to book on their own use the public online booking page, and reception approves the request.
- OPDly does not answer incoming patient WhatsApp messages automatically.

Frequently asked questions
What is a hospital chatbot?
Software that chats with patients, usually on WhatsApp or the hospital website. It answers common questions, collects appointment requests, sends reminders and passes the chat to a person when it cannot help.
Which is better for Indian hospitals, a WhatsApp or a website chatbot?
Usually WhatsApp, because patients already use it daily, it supports Hindi and regional languages, and the hospital can send reminders. A website chatbot helps only if many patients arrive from your site.
Can a hospital chatbot book appointments?
Yes. It can collect the patient's name, doctor and preferred date and pass the request to reception or to booking software. Many hospitals get the same result with an online booking page, with no chat.
Can a hospital chatbot give medical advice?
It should not. A hospital chatbot should answer logistics only and send any health question to a doctor or an emergency number.
How much does a hospital chatbot cost in India?
Hosted plans advertised for clinics and hospitals started from roughly ₹500–1,500 a month in our November 2026 checks, with custom builds costing much more. WhatsApp message charges, setup and maintenance are often extra, so ask for the full price.
Is it legal to use a chatbot on WhatsApp for a hospital?
Yes, on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, with patient opt-in and approved templates. Automating a normal WhatsApp account through WhatsApp Web breaks WhatsApp's terms and the number can be banned.
Does my hospital need a chatbot?
Not always. If your main need is confirmations, tokens and reminders, automation inside your hospital software covers it. Add a chatbot when incoming questions are more than reception can answer.
